I might be a bit obsessed with photographs of famous people reading. This photo of Elvis is from an American Library Association READ poster. This particular poster adorns a second floor window of Square Books in Oxford, Mississippi. On the square of Oxford, dress stores and jewelers, restaurants and gift shops go in and out of business. Sometimes the corner store sells shoes and handbags and a year later will be the home to a sequined gown shop.
You know what doesn't change? THREE bookstores on the square. Square Books has a shop for children and youth (Square Books Jr.) and a space for discounted books and magazines (Off Square Books). It's heartening that a small town sees the value in books.
You know what else is heartening? The story of the independent booksellers in Memphis. I look forward to telling that story soon! (If you too love a good black and white photo of a famous person reading, check out East Grove Studio's Pinterest board "Style for Readers.")
